Kilauea Volcano Project: The exploration of the life and death cycle of a volcano through the mythology of Pele the volcano goddess. Pele represents both the destruction of the island and the growth and rebuilding of the island. Pele destroys then Pele rebuilds as she sees fit. The ocean attacks the volcano then the volcano attacks the ocean. They are at once at war to destroy each other and at the same time working together to rebuild and grow the land. Mid-way through this project I realized that this was an allegory to me about motherhood. Pele as Mother and the building and destroying then rebuilding of the land is very similar to what we do as mothers.
